Why the name Charity
“Let all your things be done with charity”
We get asked all the time: “Why the name Charity?”
In Greek, there are four words for love in scripture (Eros, Storge, Philia, and Agape), and are characterized by romantic love, family love, brotherly love, and God’s divine love. Agape (Pronounced: Uh-GAH-pay) is the highest of the four types of love in the Bible. This term defines God’s immeasurable, incomparable love for humankind. It is the divine love that comes from God. Agape love is perfect, unconditional, sacrificial, and pure. Agape is used throughout scripture and is translated into the English word charity.
Modern day would have you believe that Charity means to give your time or money to a worthy cause or to the poor, but the scripture says “And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.” This teaches us that Charity has nothing to do with donating our time or money to the poor, but rather is what starts in us.
When our founder, Jesse Madsen, first started Charity Window Cleaning he had a goal on how he wanted this company named and how he wanted this company to run. He felt that if we were to be a business then we needed to be about service. If service then we should learn how to wear a servant’s towel, it should be large, and well-worn.
Charity as a company gives to many worthy causes, however, our name Charity is not what we do with our time or money but how we go about our business.
This is why on the back of our shirts it says:
“Let all your things be done with charity”
1 Corinthians 16:14
