One young man’s story …
Happy 4th of July! On a special day like this, I wanted to share a special thought with you.
John Gillespie Magee was an American pilot in the Second World War. He was killed at age 19 during a training flight when his plane collided with another plane. During his life, he wrote this sonnet titled ‘High Flight’ and it is featured on many of the headstones at Arlington National Cemetery.
High Flight
“Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds-
And done a hundred things you have not dreamed of-
Wheeled and soared and swung high in the sunlit silence.
Hovering there I’ve chased the shouting wind along
And flung my eager craft through the footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace,
Where never lark, or even eagle, flew;
And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.”
This letter has nothing to do with business and everything to do with life.
Thinking of you this 4th of July.
Sincerely,
Jesse Madsen
